The Camera In India
The advent of the camera in India and what Indians saw through it
This was a classroom project, which explored the advent of the Camera in India and into the hands of the Indian photographer. The Camera was introduced in India by the British, just a year after its invention by Louis Daguerre in Paris in 1839. The camera brought about a revolution in a culture that had very rarely experienced 3 dimensions and realistic imagery on a 2 dimensional surface.
What the Indians did in reaction to this, transformed photography from just a medium of documentation, to a form of art. It took on an almost spiritual form in the country, and even changed the way we looked at other forms of art. Below is a glimpse of some of the specimens I came across in my study.
- Research, compilation and report creation.
- Printed or soft copy book
